Groceries:
The Pig in Monteagle: Don’t depend on the produce and most food but you can get the basics.
Food City in Cowan/Winchester: Large, newer grocery store. Options but still not great on produce.
Kroger in Winchester: A step down from Food City and a few miles further into Winchester.
Farmer’s Markets:
Sewanee: Saturday morning on highway 41 to the west of downtown. Limited but you can get backed goods and seasonal vegities
South Cumberland Farmer’s Market: Order over the weekend and pick-up at the downtown community center on Tuesday from 4-6 p.m.. This is where you find the best produce. It is seasonal and limited. Do your shopping on Saturday morning online before things sell-out.
Moonies: For the vegetarian and vegan, this is your spot for supplies. A small market on the way from Monteagle to Sewanee, they have a small selection of local produce and lots of interesting vegetarian dry goods. They also have gelato.
The Market: Downtown Sewanee. A place for beer and a reasonable selection of ice cream and gelato.
The Seafood Place: This quirky seafood source in Tullahoma is worth the drive. They also have a truck that comes up and sells from the Mountain Goat Market most Saturday mornings. You can call them during the week and order things to be delivered to the pick-up spot on Saturday morning. You won’t go wrong with their options. Incredible crab cake sandwiches… in middle Tennessee!
Chattanooga has two Whole Foods and a Trader Joe’s. Use the downtown Whole Foods- the one out by the Mall is small and not well stocked.
Huntsville also has Whole Foods, Fresh Market and Trader Joes.
Nashville has it all.
Wine and Liquor:
Lots of options in Huntsville and Nashville but if you are coming through Chattanooga, things are more limited. Try Imbibe http://www.imbibechattanooga.com/
Ordering food:
Up In Smoke BBQ: 10 W Main St, Monteagle, TN 37356. This is a simple little place but if you give them advance notice, they can provide large quantities of BBQ basics.
Lunch: This is a new spot but there is a catering component.
Natural Bridge Catering: This is one of the few caterers in the area.
Going Out To Eat:
Shenanigans: A Sewanee Staple, bar food
Stirlings’ Coffee House: The owner of Arcadia founded this as a student so we are biased. Bagels, sandwiches and salads and great coffee. There is no website but the instagram feed is linked.
Lunch: New spot in downtown Sewanee and worth supporting
Sewanee Inn: The Shake Rag Pub is 200 yards through the woods from Arcadia. Bar food and a center for local community.
Luminer: New dinner and brunch spot in downtown Sewanee behind “The Market” on the north side of highway 41.
High Point in Monteagle: Club Food. Good, pricy. A little dull but the atmosphere is fun.
Mountain Goat Market: Sandwiches and pizza and really crazy lines. This place always seems overrun. Make sure you don’t go on a busy weekend at a regular time. Ordering ahead can be good.
Pearl’s: This place has had more owners and chefs than anyone can count. Right now, it has a mediterian theme. There is a facebook page.
